The Possum Dreaming is a story passed down through generations, and one that his grandfather, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, painted many times throughout his life. Like his grandfather, Danny uses painting as a way to map stories across the land, sharing important knowledge through colour, symbol, and memory.
In this work, you can see the lines made by the possum’s tail as it travels at night through desert Country, winding across the canvas like a story unfolding. The footprints sit alongside the tail lines, marking the journey. The coloured sections show shifts in vegetation and landscape, while concentric circles often represent trees or campsites where the possum rests. Through this painting, Danny continues a legacy of storytelling, one rooted in ancestral presence and connection to Country.
About the Artist – Danny Possum Tjampitjinpa
Danny Possum Tjampitjinpa is an emerging Indigenous artist from Alice Springs, and the son of Michelle Possum Nungurrayi and grandson of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri - two of the most respected names in Australian Aboriginal art.
Growing up surrounded by artists and storytellers, Danny has inherited a deep cultural knowledge and a strong visual language. His paintings reflect his grandfather’s iconic style, blending traditional Aboriginal symbolism with layered dot work to tell stories of Country, Dreaming, and identity.
Danny now lives in Victoria with his wife and their two sons. He continues to paint with respect for his heritage and pride in his family’s cultural legacy.
