This painting tells the story of the Honey Ant Dreaming, a cherished Central Desert story passed down through generations. Honey ants are a prized bush delicacy, found deep underground in jirrijirrinpa (mulga woodland) Country. Their nests stretch through long tunnels into hidden chambers called mingki, where the ants hang from the ceiling, storing sweet nectar in their swollen abdomens. These special ants are unable to move and are carefully gathered by women for food.

Merle Gorey is a talented Central Desert artist from Alice Springs, deeply connected to her culture and Country.

Merle paints the ‘Honey Ant Dreaming’, a story passed down through generations. Honey ants live deep beneath the red sands of the desert and have long been an important source of food and cultural knowledge for Aboriginal people. Gathering them takes patience and skill, reflecting the strength and care within her community.

Each of Merle’s works carries the spirit of the land, the strength of her ancestors, and a richness of Central Desert culture.
